Created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1929, the Barcelona armchair is an iconic piece of furniture that has been considered a masterpiece of modernity for more than 80 years due to its elegant and practical design, and is held in high esteem in elite designer interiors.

Mies van der Rohe started his career at his father’s stone-working company and opened his own design office in 1912. He moved to Chicago in 1938, where he created such famous works as the German Pavilion at the Barcelona Exhibition in 1929, the Seagram residential towers in Chicago, Villa Tugendhat in Brno and the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Mies van der Rohe believed in the need for appropriate furniture to complement architectural design and create harmony in interiors. He considered the development of a chair a difficult task, since strength, lightness and comfort were required. However, he created a Barcelona Chair for the German pavilion at the 1929 World Art Exhibition in Barcelona, which was visited by representatives of different countries and members of the royal family of Spain.

The Barcelona armchair met the standard set by Mies van der Rohe and became a throne for the royal couple of Spain, as it was the only furniture in the room. After the exhibition, its popularity increased dramatically, and it earned a reputation as an iconic piece of furniture, known for its practicality and timeless design.
